The Elizabeth J. Latimer Prize in Palliative Care
The Elizabeth J. Latimer Prize in Palliative Care is awarded in honour of Dr. Elizabeth J. Latimer, pioneer and internationally renowned Palliative Care physician and educator. The prize provides an opportunity to honour not only Dr. Latimer, but also other colleagues whose work continues to pave the way for growth and improvement of Palliative Care in our region.
The prize shall be presented to recognize a palliative care clinician, teacher, researcher, or administrator who best represents the spirit of Dr. Latimer through a record of advancing palliative care in the McMaster catchment area. The selection committee seeks a candidate who has demonstrated:
a. a commitment to compassionate, comprehensive palliative care to patients and their families &
b. a commitment to interprofessional collaboration and support &
c. a spirit of pioneering, trail blazing, and innovation &
d. initiative and perseverance that has resulted in the advancement of palliative care
As well as at least 2 of the following:
e. excellence in clinical care
f. excellence in teaching and the development of academic thought
g. outstanding leadership and support for colleagues
h. participation in policy or system development at the regional, provincial or national level

The Dr. Bev Hattersley Award for Palliative Care Leadership at McMaster University
ANNOUNCEMENT: To UNDERGRADUATE FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES (FHS) STUDENTS AT MCMASTER UNIVERSITY STUDENTS
If you are currently a medical student or any FHS undergraduate learner at McMaster University, please nominate a colleague whom you think has worked to advance palliative care education in the undergraduate curriculum and/or palliative care in their community.
THE DR. BEV HATTERSLEY AWARD FOR PALLIATIVE CARE LEADERSHIP AT MCMASTER UNIVERSITY
This annual award from the Division of Palliative Care at McMaster University recognizes palliative care leadership by a medical student or other undergraduate (UG) learner in any other program of study at McMaster University’s Faculty of Health Sciences. Leadership is demonstrated by efforts to advance palliative care education, participate in palliative care research, and/or advocacy in undergraduate curricula, or any activity to advance palliative care in their local community.
The Award
Certificate and prize of $500 from the Division of Palliative Care, supported through the generosity of Dr. Bev Hattersley’s family.
Who is eligible?
Candidates must be:
- Actively enrolled in an undergraduate program in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University (in any school or program).
- In any year of training.
How to apply:
Each nomination needs to be accompanied by 2 letters of support (from a colleague and/or faculty member) with evidence of accomplishments and impact (if available). This can be in the form of a letter (not more than 2 pages) describing their work and efforts, why they have done this work, the impact of their efforts, and how they intend to advance palliative care in the future. Please submit the information in one PDF package.

The Dr. Anthony Kerigan Award for Leadership in Integrating Palliative Care in a Long Term Care Home
ANNOUNCEMENT: To Long Term Care Homes in the Greater Hamilton Health Network (GHHN).
Nominate a long-term care (LTC) home for this award in honour of Dr. Tony Kerrigan if it has shown leadership in integrating the palliative care approach in the home. You may nominate your own facility, or any other deserving LTC home.
THE DR. ANTONY KERIGAN AWARD FOR LEADERSHIP IN INTEGRATING PALLIATIVE CARE IN A LONG-TERM CARE HOME
This new annual award from the Division of Palliative Care at McMaster University recognizes large scale integration of the palliative care approach in a long-term care (LTC) facility/home. Leadership is demonstrated by, among others, training the majority of the staff on the palliative care approach (primary palliative care), regular access to a specialist palliative care team for support, and quality improvement activities and policies that support the integration of early and timely palliative care.
The Award
Certificate PLUS plaque or stand-up poster to be displayed at the home’s entrance.
Who is eligible?
To be eligible, LTC facilities must provide a description of their initiatives in this area and evidence of impact.
Nominations are welcome from LTC facility staff (including staff of any profession, clinicians and leadership), external partners or palliative care consultation teams.
How to apply
Each nomination needs to be accompanied by a 2-to-3-page letter describing the work and efforts undertaken in the home or group of homes to integrate palliative care, and the impact of the efforts to date. Please submit the information in one PDF package.
